“The Atlantic House”
Siasconset, MA
Originally constructed as a summer hotel in 1848, the Atlantic House, with its wrap around porches conducive to “taking in the cool bracing air of ‘Sconset”, was designed in the Greek Revival style and was considered one of Nantucket’s finest hotels on the island.
In 1924, the Atlantic House was moved to an adjacent property and converted into a single family residence. With the elimination of the wrap-around porches and the lowering of the entire roof, taking it from a 2 story hotel building to a 1 ½ story residence, the hotel underwent a significant architectural transformation.
Today, the residence is protected from further architectural changes by a Historic Preservation Easement administered by the ‘Sconset Trust to protect the history of the Atlantic House for generations to come. Design Associates has assisted the owners to refine the interior spaces for large family gatherings during the summer months, always mindful of seamlessly integrating the changes into the simple yet elegant Greek Revival style.
Projected Completion: Summer 2010
